CU female golfer Emily Talley will be spending her summer doing more than lying on the beach.
Talley, who helped the CU female golf team to its most successful season in program history this fall, is headed to the Summer World University Games in Shenzhen, China from Aug. 12 to Aug. 23.
The event, which is the equivalent of the Summer Olympic Games for collegiate competitors, will draw about 8,000 athletes from around the world in 24 different sports. This year is only the second year that golf has been a part of the Games.
The standout junior was selected after achieving five top-10 performances in her fall season. She opened her season with a second place at the Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic and continued to thrive throughout the fall, becoming only the second golfer in program history with a stroke average under 74. This season, she has already played seven subpar rounds, including three rounds in the 60s.
Talley also holds the CU records for most strokes under par in a round (6-under at the Dick McGuire Invitational) and in a tournament (7-under at the Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic.)
“[Talley] has shown that she can go low and put up some great golf scores,” said USA Coach Diane Thomason in a news release.
Thanks to Talley’s leadership, the Buffs’ women earned two team victories and one second, third and fourth place in their five season events. They have risen up the ranks in the Golfstate, Golfweek and Golf World polls, now listed at 25th overall.
At the WUG Championship, Talley will play a 72-hole, stroke play event. Of the five women chosen from the United States, three will compete for the team score and two will compete as individuals.
“I think it is going to be an excellent opportunity for me and I’m very excited about it,” Talley said in a news release. “It’s worldwide and it will be a great experience.”
