Tournament brings victory over Northern Arizona, University of New Mexico; only defeat was to Arizona
The CU women’s water polo team traveled to Park City, Utah, last weekend for the Southwest Division Tournament. The team went 3-1 in what coach Chris Hrach said were “convincing wins” because “we killed them.”
On March 3, the team had wins over Northern Arizona University and the University of New Mexico. The only loss of the weekend was to the conference-leading Arizona Wildcats.
Southwest Division Tournament Standings
Colorado vs. New Mexico—9-5
Colorado vs. Arizona—3-8
Colorado vs. Northern Arizona—17-4
Colorado vs. Colorado State—16-6
“It was a really close game to the best team in the league,” Hrach said. “This was the most difficult game Arizona has played all season.”
Since New Mexico did not have a full team to play, Colorado lent its extra players. Although counted as a forfeit, the score of the makeshift game was 9-5.
On March 4, the Buffs solidified a strong weekend with a 16-6 victory over Colorado State University. While the top-scorer was team captain and sophomore Alex Mc Lain, the new members also made a strong impact.
“The younger freshman class really stepped it up and played incredibly,” Hrach said. “(Their) incredible defensive effort and solid fundamentals are a snapshot of what will develop into a championship-caliber team for the next three years.”
CU is tied for fourth in the Southwest Conference after the tournament. The team travels to Tucson, Ariz., next month for the Southwest Division Championship on April 14 and 15.
