9/24: Kamasi Washington
Kamasi Washington brings a big dose of funk to the Boulder Theater this Thursday, Sept. 24. This Los Angeles native grew up mastering the saxophone since he was 13, something he makes the most of in his music. Popular hits such as “Change of the Guard” and “Miss Understanding” exemplify his incredible saxophone talent along with background drums, piano and keyboard notes. Washington has ventured out of the jazz genre by collaborating closely with artists such as Snoop Dogg and Lauryn Hill. Washington also worked with Kendrick Lamar on his latest album “To Pimp a Butterfly.”
9/25: Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe
Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe will perform at the Boulder Theater this Friday, Sept. 25. Denson, founder of the band, is a saxophonist from Southern California and comes from a rich music background, having formerly been a member of Lenny Kravitz’s band. Denson has also performed and collaborated with a number of renowned groups, including Slightly Stoopid and The Rolling Stones. Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe presents a funky vibe with saxophone and flute elements, but goes beyond modern jazz with its fun-filled lyrics and tone. Dance-inducing hits like “Shake it Out” demonstrate the band’s range. Denson’s band will also play the Ogden Theatre on Saturday, Sept. 26.
9/26: Lettuce and The Growlers
Lettuce, a funk band based in Brooklyn, hits Boulder Theater this Saturday, Sept. 26. The seven-member band has cultivated a jam band sound that comes from a fusion of psychedelic elements and funky jam vibes, the likes of which are most prominent in the songs “Do It Like You Do” and “Fly.”
Also on Saturday, Sept. 26, the Fox Theatre welcomes The Growlers, an American band from Orange County, Calif. The Growlers play a diverse range of music, presenting themselves as a garage rock band. “One Million Lovers” reveals the psychedelic components of their music, while “Good Advice” exhibits more of their rock vibe. Through their multitude of sounds, The Growlers exude a 1960s American rock band energy.
