To help efforts in aiding Haiti, five CU A Capella groups performed at the Fox Theatre in order to raise awareness and funds.
Wednesday night, CU A Capella groups On the Rocks, In the Buff, Mile 21, Extreme Measures and the Buffoons put on a stellar performance before a very enthusiastic audience. The crowd comprised mostly of CU students, but non-collegiate Boulder residents were also very well-represented.
Promotional representative Layne Lewis, 23, distributed flyers around town and on campus, to publicize the event. She also worked the ticket booth that evening and described the tremendous turn-out:
“There was such a huge response,” Lewis said. “There was a line down to Cafe Roma.”
The singers dazzled the crowd with a wide range of vocals and a mix of modern and classic tunes.
On the Rocks’ rendition of “Hide and Seek” by Imogen Heap was well-harmonized and well-received by concert-goers, who responded with a thundering ovation.
The Buffoons’ performance of “Signed, Sealed, Delivered,” by Stevie Wonder, was energetic and got the crowd involved, on their feet and clapping to the beat. Their beatboxing was impressive as well.
Production Manager Alexandra Decker of On the Rocks is credited with setting up the benefit and booking the Fox Theater, said group member Emily Pasternak, 19, a sophomore psychology major.
Pasternak discussed why she and the other On the Rocks group members wanted to participate in the benefit.
“We wanted to raise awareness, raise money, and bring somewhat of a peaceful ending to the tragedy in Haiti,” Pasternak said.
Concert-goers seemed overall very pleased with the A Capella performances, and with the initiative taken to help victims of the earthquake in Haiti.
According to On the Rocks’ Facebook event page, all proceeds collected from this evening “will go directly to Doctors Without Borders to aid the victims of the Haitian earthquake.” A silent auction was held during intermission and a donation table provided to give patrons plenty of room to express their contribution and support for the victims of Haiti.
Daniel Camp, a 20-year-old sophomore majoring in civil engineering said he attended the event in order to support his fellow CU students, and also to contribute to such a significant cause. He was pleased that the concert was held at the Fox Theatre, rather than on campus.
“I went to support our school, but also to support Haiti,” Camp said. “I’m glad they threw it at the Fox, it seemed like a bigger production than had it been thrown in a lecture hall.”
Lewis said he was impressed that all five CU A Capella groups managed to work together and put on such a successful and beneficial show.
“I think it’s great that all the [A Capella] groups came together to donate to such a cause,” Lewis said.
