When the weather outside is frightful, it’s a good option to have fun without spending any cash. Here are some ways to have fun for the price of nothing during the next big snow storm.
1. Build a structure. When there is plenty of snow outside, it is easy to build a creation out of it.
Lynn Baird, an 18-year-old freshman environmental design major, and his roommates built what they called “Snow Castle 09,” during Colorado’s last big snow storm.
“It was a castle of snow on our patio in Athens North,” Baird said. “We built it because there was sufficient snow to be built.”
Baird said it took him and his roommates about two hours to make it, with five people building it.
“The people around us were making forts and such in the snow,” Baird said, “while others were running around trying to get out of the snow.”
In front of the Stearns East tower in Williams Village a student built an igloo, using snow and a cardboard box as the door. Kelsey Jonikas, a 19-year-old sophomore film studies major, watched as it was being built.
“I saw the igloo man, he was in a black [tank top] and pants,” Jonikas said. “Maybe he was working so hard he didn’t need any protection from the cold.”
2. Go sledding. Find a sled and a good hill to go down. If you don’t have a sled, use a car mat or a trash bag. Others in Williams Village pulled out their snowboards and hit the snow.
3. Have a snowball fight. Jonikas and her roommate had a “powder fight” while walking to their room.
“It looked cool when all of the snow was flying everywhere,” Jonikas said. “We did it the day after the snow.”
In Williams Village, two floors from the Stearns East tower challenged each other to a snowball fight. Bryan Salinas, an 18-year-old freshman open-option major, participated along with about 30 other people.
“It was the fourth floor versus the third floor,” Salinas said. “We just threw snow balls at each other and we also tackled each other.”
Salinas also said that they gave each other “snow baths.”
“This sounds mean, but it’s when someone is down on the floor, like sitting or laying, and you just cover them with snow by kicking it or just scooping it,” Salinas said. “Usually you go for the head.”
Salinas said that neither floor won the fight and it ended up being a free-for-all.
