Before we know it, the snow covering the ground will be replaced with CU students sitting on the grass, throwing Frisbees or listening to music.
In order to help ease the pain of this late winter, CU Independent Staff Writer Jenny Gumbert shares her favorite songs that highlight the best that spring sound.
“Postcards From Italy”

The sound of the ukulele instantly evokes sunshine. As the opening notes of this song from Zach Condon’s first album are lightly strummed, it is hard not to feel warm sun on your skin. The song is a snapshot of a perfect sunny day, filled with recollections of bitters days of past and how those memories can melt into happier ones as Condon imagines the day when he marries his lady.
“Are You A Hypnotist??”
The Flaming Lips
The dreamy, psychedelic sounds of The Flaming Lips never fail to set the perfect tone for watching the clouds slowly pass overhead as signer Wayne Coyne asks, “Are You A Hypnotist??” over a steady drum beat and spacey reverberation. The combination of this track, sunlight and the dull hum of campus sounds never fails to put the listener in a euphoric trance-like state.
“Happiness”
Goldfrapp
Just watching this music video is enough to help one understand the sunny world of English artists Alison Goldfrapp. One can only hope to be apart of her dreamy euphoria and bounce with her through this song off of her album “A&E.” In Goldfrapp’s world, plants come to life and dance with her has she sighs, “How’d you get to be happiness?” along swirling synth textures that are as light and airy as clouds. If this is what the English countryside is like in the spring, sign me up.
