Batman or Superman? Which hero is more popular on campus?
Batman and Superman are two of the biggest comic book characters of all time. The debate between which hero is better has been a hot issue for years.
While only one hero can be No. 1, both characters have valuable traits.
Superman
According to Superman’s homepage, Superman has been in the media since 1938 – a year longer than Batman.
Unlike Batman, Superman, aka the Man of Steel, is practically invincible.
“Superman can dodge bullets, and that’s awesome,” said David Jenista, 20, a junior environmental design major.
As well as invulnerability, the homepage also states that Superman has a variety of powers including super strength and speed, the ability to fly, X-ray vision, heat vision and even super breath that can freeze objects or people.
Unlike Batman, he can even use all of his skills without wearing a mask.
“He doesn’t have a mask on so you can see his face. He is more personable,” said Courtney Ricci, 21, a senior integrative physiology major.
While he seems to have it all, he also has his share of weaknesses.
Magic and Kryptonite, a radioactive rock from his home planet of Krypton, can injure or kill the Man of Steel.
Batman
While both characters have long histories of being heroes, Batman is very different from Superman.
Most importantly, he’s just a normal man.
“He doesn’t have any superpowers, he’s just like you or me and he still manages to be a superhero,” said Caleb Pilon, 19, a sophomore business major.
While Superman relies on his powers to save people, Batman must train himself and create devices as well as a costume to help him finish the job.
According to Superhero Universe, Batman has a variety of vehicles to get him around such as the Batcopter, Batplane, Batmobile and Batboat.
While slightly redundant, his vehicles are based on real transportation.
Since Batman can’t fly, he uses technology to help make him stronger.
For what Batman lacks in abilities and skills he makes up for with cool crime-fighting gadgets.
The Results
So which character is CU’s favorite?
While the results were close, Batman beat Superman for the title of CU’s favorite superhero.
Out of 50 random students interviewed at the UMC, 25 voted for Batman, 15 for Superman and 10 voted for various superheroes.
Batman may not be able to dodge bullets or fly, but being a human superhero gets him extra points.
