Two days of music bring over 50 bands to legendary amphitheatre
Red Rocks Amphitheatre will host over 50 bands on 5 stages at the inaugural Monolith Festival Sept. 14-15.
“It’s the biggest festival in Red Rocks history,” said Nathan Bertke, Rocky Mountain marketing director of AEG Live.
According to the festival’s website, there are 64 bands expected to play.
The list of bands scheduled to perfom includes The Decemberists, Vienna Teng, The Flaming Lips, Everything Absent or Distorted, On a Sun and Stranger Lazy.
Boulder bands will also be at the event. Nina Storey, Gregory Alan Isakov and 3OH!3 are all expected to attend.
Red Rocks Amphitheatre is located in Morrison, which is about 40 minutes south of Boulder. Despite the distance, it might be hard to stop some CU students from making the drive.
“When the festival was announced, I was like a little kid on Christmas morning,” said Dave Kelly, 18, a freshman undeclared journalism major. “[It is] two sweaty, exhausting, long, incredible days of some of today’s best bands in one of the best venues on the planet. It’s heaven. I really can’t think of anything better.”
The event begins in the early afternoon and ends before midnight on both days. Each band has a set time to perform, but there is no official start or end time for the entire event.
A ticket for both nights costs $91.00. A ticket for just one night is $51.95. The payment for parking is included with the ticket.
While the event may make a huge impact on fans, festival organizers are taking steps to make sure it doesn’t make an impact on the environment.
The Monolith Festival plans to keep the event environmentally friendly by adding seven new Rocky Mountain Junipers to the areas around the amphitheatre. Recycling in the amphitheatre as well as in the parking lot is also being stressed throughout the event.

“I really hope it catches on,” said Chris Towle, 18, a freshman advertising major. “How cool would it be to rock out at a Monolith festival 20 years from now and tell all of the hipster college students that you’ve been to every single one?”
