Mountain getaway perfect for day, weekend trips
With class in full swing, most students could use a weekend getaway to escape from the realities of homework and studying.
When looking for somewhere to drive this fall, consider the small town of Nederland, located about 15 miles west of Boulder. To get there, take Canyon Blvd. west, which will eventually turn into Highway 119. Follow 119 directly to the tiny town of Nederland.
Like most trips, half of the fun is getting there.
The trip to Nederland is exceptionally beautiful, especially once the leaves begin to change colors in upcoming weeks. The road wraps around majestic mountains and winds along rivers all the way to the small town, which abuts the Barker Reservoir.
Once in the town, there is plenty to do for a day away. Visit one of many small restaurants and cafes for visitors, as well as places to do some small-town shopping. Those who want a break from Pearl Street will feel right at home.
For those who are athletic and like the outdoors, Nederland has much to offer. Barker Reservoir is a great place for fishing, and there is plenty of nearby open space for hiking, biking, running and cross-country running and skiing.
When outdoor activities don’t strike your fancy, Nederland still has its share things to offer. It has a museum that documents the history of the old mining town, and when that seems too dull, the town has a variety of festivals throughout the year such as Frozen Dead Guy Days that occur every March, the Nederland Music and Arts Festival and one of the largest free heritage festivals in the state.
