Art seeks to create a sense of global awareness
Residents of Smith Hall could testify that creativity can be unleashed anywhere.
A large mural decorates the inside of a Smith Hall entrance. The mural is meant to signify the global involvement of the Smith Hall International Program and features various destinations.
Junior fine arts major Dan Levinson and members of SHIP worked to create the project
“I decided to paint this piece to showcase what SHIP stands for in the academic program,” Levinson said. “This mural represents the connected nature of our world, its people and my great respect for international understanding and cultural diversity.”
The work includes worldwide destinations such as the Eiffel Tower, the Great Wall of China, the skyline of New York City, pyramids, Japanese buildings, waterfalls and deserts.
It is meant to bring about a sense of travel.
“It’s exciting to see all these places in one piece of artwork,” said Alex Lande, a freshman business major and Smith Hall resident. “I like walking into the dorm everyday and being able to look at this.”
The mural was finished in April and took around 55 to 60 hours to complete. Along with Levinson, other students and friends painted and brought ideas to the piece.
“The designs and ideas were Dan’s creation, but there were others happy to participate,” said Katie Fox, a fifth-year senior international education major and SHIP member.
This is not Levinson’s only art displayed around campus. His work can be seen every Friday in the UMC from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. for International Coffee Hour. Other works will soon be exhibited in the new Gondolier restaurant at 1600 Pearl St.
