Deals on dining options increase with Buff OneCard
The quest for a cheap, tasty meal in Boulder can seem as elusive and difficult as searching for the Holy Grail.
But a flash of your Buff OneCard is just the ticket needed at some local restaurants to save cash on your meal.
The Dark Horse (2922 Baseline Road) offers students a chance to subside their hunger with the “Starving Student” deal, said Alex Goldstein, who works at the bar.
Everyday from 3 to 8 p.m. student status will earn you a hamburger, a side and a soda or beer for $6. It is a tradition that has been running strong for the past 25 years, Goldstein said.
If you forget your ID, every Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday are “Burger Madness” days, where burgers are $5 for everyone, not just students.
At Applebees (1700 28th St.), students who bring their Buff OneCard can purchase a burger or wrap for $5.
The program started recently to increase guest count at the restaurant, manager William McCleary said.
If a sit-down establishment doesn’t fit the bill, students can also find deals at faster, take-out restaurants.
Both Chipotle (919 Pearl St. and 1650 28th St.) and Heidi’s Brooklyn Deli (908 Pearl St.) give students a free fountain drink with purchase.
For students who want a wider selection of restaurants and weekly deals, the Flatiron Meal Plan might be better than frequenting the same restaurants repeatedly.
“It’s basically an off-campus meal plan for students at CU-Boulder,” owner Alex Woodbury said.
The plan lets you, or your parents, load a card with dollars to be used at the 85 participating restaurants in Boulder with no upfront fee, Woodbury said. Each week a different restaurant is featured where plan members receive a 10 percent discount.
But don’t think the card means money for booze, the program is only redeemable for food, not alcohol.
Woodbury said deposits on the card per semester usually range from $650 up to $2,000. And if there’s money left over after the semester ends, it won’t expire, but roll over to next semester.
Finally, those students just looking for a good deal – no ID required – should check out all-you-can-eat spaghetti for $6.95 at the Gondolier (1600 Pearl St.), and for dessert, buy six cookies get six free at Paradise Bakery (1207 Pearl St.).
If you don’t mind restricting your meals to certain times of day, happy hours all over Boulder feature great deals on food and drinks. Discounted hors d’oeuvres start as low as $1 at some restaurants.
