There are two ways to look at the looming college experience. Some freshmen point out that they’ve been in school for 12 years already, and that another four are no big deal. Others believe that college is the determinant of their entire professional future. But like most things in life, there is a middle ground.
Student governments in high school were responsible for planning the prom and homecoming, hanging pretty signs in the halls and organizing fundraisers for the next pep rally. Some university student governments don’t do much more. But the University of Colorado Student Union gives elected officials a significant voice.
Incoming students have enough expenses to worry about — rising tuition costs, decorating the dorm and finding their way around a new, exciting city. Being cautious about where you buy your books can award you some extra cash to use on those late Thursday nights on the Hill, or even for some shopping on Pearl Street.
When you wake up for that first class this fall, put on that brand-new outfit you’ve had picked out since July and spend your first hour in a college classroom scanning the faces of your new cohorts, the only thing stopping you from having the best first day of college will be navigating the campus you now call home.

CU men’s basketball finished at the bottom of the Big 12 last season. That is where the quality of the university’s basketball facilities sits as well. When new head coach Jeff Bzdelik began talking with Colorado, he knew that needed to change. Bzdelik immediately pointed out the insufficiency when he met with Chancellor Bud Peterson, athletic director Mike Bohn and associate athletic director Tom McGrath.
Most graduates lived independently at least four years now. The freedom to stay out late and sleep well into the afternoon is privileges many are not willing to give up, especially with the abundance of graduation parties in Boulder next weekend. So, what do you do with parents and extended family during graduation weekend? Getting together with out-of-town family is pleasant, but it is advisable to make a few plans for the ‘rents and grandma before they arrive.
Though Boulder-area schools have largely avoided the recent rash of school threats in the Denver area, law enforcement and school administrators are focusing on the mental health of students in order to prevent violence in Boulder schools. The recent rash of threats in Denver-area schools has come in the wake of the Virginia Tech shootings and the eight-year anniversary of the Columbine tragedy.
The CU Gold program commended student leaders Wednesday night with certificates and awards for their achievements. In a two-hour ceremony in the UMC, awards for emerging leader on campus, outstanding student voice, lasting legacy award, student organization of the year and supporting staff member of the year were presented.
