The weather is warmer, the sun is shining. You can virtually taste summer, but what does summer taste like?
Traditional summer foods consist of ice cream, lemonade, hamburgers and other carnival-type foods. Step away from the ordinary and try something new this summer. CU students gave their input and recommended four exotic foods to brighten up an already sunny day.
Boba (also known as bubble tea)
This sweet flavored tea was originally invented in Taiwan. Boba is made in variety of different flavors; most boba teas contain a tea base mixed with fruit and/or milk. The name “boba” comes from the trademark black tapioca balls used to make the drinks, which typically sit at the bottom of the drink.
Angela Wu, a 19-year-old freshman biochemistry major, said she feels the drink is a perfect complement to a hot summer day.
“I like boba because it cools you down on a hot summer day and it’s really chewy and sweet,” Wu said. “I would suggest [people] try it, they might be a little surprised about the texture, but it’s really good.”
Boba can be found locally at the Lollicup on the hill.
Mochi ice cream
Mochi ice cream is a Japanese treat unlike many other deserts. It combines two very different ingredients—sticky rice and ice cream—to make a delicious, non-messy finger food. The flavors of mochi ice cream cover a wide-array of fruits and vegetables, a few being: matcha (green tea), mango and red bean paste. Mochi ice cream can be found at stores like Trader Joe’s, H-Mart and Mollie Stone’s.
Bolis ice pops
These “ice pops” were originally invented in Mexico. Unlike the traditional American popsicle, these pops are place in very slender tubes and come in six sweet flavors. Freshman international affairs major Guadalupe Ortega, 18, said that she likes Bolis pops because they are more distinctive than traditional popsicles.
“I like that Bolis’ are less messy than American popsicles and ice creams,” Ortega said. “You can find them everywhere in Mexico, especially off of street vendors. Bolis’ also come in cream flavors, not just the fruit ones,” Ortega said.
Gelato
Gelato is a distinctive ice cream that was originally invented in Italy. Unlike traditional American ice cream, gelato is made denser allowing for a richer taste. The vast difference between gelato and traditional American ice cream is what makes it appealing, students say.
“I like Gelato because unlike American ice cream which is full of dairy, Gelato uses a little,” said 19-year-old sophomore and open-option major Bryce Zuccaro. “Also, my grandma makes it for me every summer.”
Gelato can be found at a variety of ice cream shops, including Glacier on the Hill.
