The competition in round two of the CU Independent’s “End of the Decade” series is on, as five more movies, live music performances, TV shows and albums are ready for you to determine if they go into the Top Ten of their category.
This “Movie Monday” segment features five Oscar winning films. On “Live Music Tuesday,” you have the power to determine if two American born divas could beat a phenomenal lady from the other side of the pond, who got more than 78 million hits on YouTube for her amazing audition on “Britain’s Got Talent.”
TV Wednesday will hopefully answer the question if three FOX shows could beat two memorable comedies from NBC and HBO. Finally on Thursday, you be the judge to determine the two best albums from a variety of amazing performers.
Here are this week’s movie choices:
1. The Aviator (2004): Directed by Martin Scorsese, this film showed the light and dark days of eccentric millionaire Howard Hughes, his relationships with celebrities and his struggle with obsessive compulsive disorder. It starred Leonardo DiCaprio as Hughes and Cate Blanchett, whose spot-on portrayal of Katharine Hepburn helped her receive her first Oscar for Best Supporting Actress.
2. Shrek (2001): Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz and John Lithgow voiced this story about an ogre and his donkey sidekick to rescue a princess in the 3-D computer animation movie that won the first Academy Award for Best Animated Feature in 2001.
3. Chicago (2002): This musical film based on the Broadway show featured an all-star cast including Catherine Zeta-Jones, who won an Academy Award for her role as vaudevillian trouble maker Velma Kelly and Renee Zellweger as her sometimes friend, sometimes enemy Roxie Hart.
4. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000): This martial arts movie which won an Oscar for Best Foreign Film takes viewers back to the Qing Dynasty in China to witness a story of spies, patriarchy, violence and love.
5. Dreamgirls (2006): While Beyonce and Eddie Murphy may have been the headliners of this film about a fictional R&B girl group, Jennifer Hudson, who won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her portrayal of powerhouse diva Effie White, stole the show.
