With numerous films coming out this summer, CU Independent Staff Writer Jacob Elyachar picks out the films to watch.
1. “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” – The “X-Men” film series returns on May 1 as audiences learn about Wolverine’s origins. Expect cameos by many famous mutants including Gambit, Sabertooth and Emma Frost. Hugh Jackman returns to play the feral X-Man.
2. “Star Trek” – The long-running science fiction series hopes for a brand new start as the film takes a look on how Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock, played by Chris Pine and “Heroes’” Zachary Quinto respectfully, meet. The two characters go where no man has gone before on May 7.
3. “Angels and Demons” – Tom Hanks returns as Robert Langdon on May 15 in the film adaptation of Dan Brown’s best-selling novel. Langdon will be put to the ultimate test when he uncovers the murders caused by the malicious Illuminati.
4. “Up” – The tenth animated film collaboration between Disney and Pixar will focus on Carl, a grumpy retired balloon salesman (voiced by Ed Asner) and his journey with Russell, a stow-away boy scout who joins him on a journey to South America aboard Carl’s giant-balloon house on May 29.
5. “Land of the Lost” -Will Ferrell stars on June 5 as a paleontologist on who fell from grace but lands in an uncanny world filled with dinosaurs. This live-action film is an adaptation of the 1974 television series.
6. “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” -In the highly anticipated sequel to the 2007 blockbuster movie, Shia LaBeouf, Josh Duhamel and Megan Fox reprise their roles as the war between Optimus Prime’s Autobots and Megatron’s Decepticons heats up on June 24.
7. “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” – The “Harry Potter” film series continues July 15 as Harry begins his sixth year at Hogwarts with a new mission to prepare for the final battle with Lord Voldemort.
8. “G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra” -One of the longest running action figure franchises finally receives the live-action film treatment on August 7. This film will show how COBRA, the criminal organization, started and how the Joes will try to prevent them from taking over the world.
9. “Julie and Julia” – Meryl Streep takes on the role of the formable Julia Child on August 7, while Amy Adams plays Julie Powell, who begins a quest to master over 500 of Child’s recipes.
