Emergency siren and text messaging testing planned for Monday
CU and the city of Boulder will be participating in a county-wide test of flood warning sirens on Monday.
Starting on Monday at 10 a.m., and proceeding on the first Monday of each month through August, the 2 minute siren tests will be activated throughout Boulder County in preparation for the peak flood season.
“We test them as awareness for the public and to make sure that the sirens are functioning properly during the flash flood season,” said Merrie Harper from the Office of Emergency Management in Boulder.
The warning sirens are located throughout Boulder County including Longmont, Louisville and Lafayette.
As well as siren testing, Boulder County has designated April 7 as “Flood Awareness Day” and advises residents to review their plans for emergency situations like flooding.
In addition to the county-wide siren testing, CU will also be testing Rave, the campus emergency text messaging alert system. Students who are signed up for the system should except to receive a text message around noon on Monday.
“We will send out a single text indicating that it is a test,” CU spokesman Bronson Hilliard said. “We want students to let us know if they don’t receive the message.”
Students said they feel that the Rave system has been an effective way to stay informed of incidents on campus.
“I definitely feel safer having it now,” said Nicole Palovick, a sophomore architecture major.
Hilliard said approximately 9,918 subscribers to the Rave system are students.
