‘Four Months Ago’
Wow. Just, wow.
This week’s “Heroes” took us back four months to what happened between Peter’s explosion and the beginning of the new season, while providing plenty of surprises and outright shocks in the process.
The biggest shock was that DL survived being shot by Linderman and recovered. DL, Niki and Micah moved. DL became a firefighter – secretly using his phasing powers to save lives – and Niki was to begin work as a car salesman.
Niki met Bob who gave her medication to suppress her evil alter ego Jessica, but she hated taking them and stopped. A new personality emerged, Gina, who seems to be a party-club sex kitten. Gina went to Los Angeles, where DL found her in the club scene. Niki was finally able to suppress Gina and go home with DL, but her Los Angeles boyfriend took exception to DL’s “claim” and shot DL in the chest without warning.
So that’s how DL really died and why Niki is so dedicated to the Company. She thought DL would still be alive if she had followed their medical advice. Bob claims that Niki is simply sick – suffering from multiple-personality disorder – but he seems disingenuous. He knows something more.
The nature of Niki’s powers are still unclear and getting more so. It’s becoming less likely that Jessica really is her deceased sister, especially with the addition of Gina.
Peter, with Adam’s help, gets his memory back. Most of the episode focuses on Peter’s flashbacks of what led to his Irish sojourn.
Peter survived the explosion with hardly a scratch, but Nathan wasn’t so lucky. He was terribly burned – first from carrying a flaming Peter and then by Peter’s explosion. Peter recovered fast enough to rush Nathan to the hospital and disappear. But before he could go far, he was captured by Elle – the lightning-bearing blonde who killed Ricky (Peter’s Irish mobster friend).
Peter was taken to Bob at the Company, who offered Peter the chance to lose his powers forever. He was given a room and medication by Elle, along with daily shocks borderlining on some kind of sex play. Elle told Peter a bit of her story, a series of power-related disasters that resulted in her institutionalization. Apparently the Company found some use for her.
At first, Peter was quite happy to be rid of the powers that so badly harmed his brother. But then Peter began to realize the reality of his position – that of a prisoner.
Adam, formerly known as Takezo Kensei from feudal Japan, is in the next cell and claims that he had been there for thirty years. He admits to Peter that he is four hundred years old and claims that he can heal Nathan.
He and Adam planned an escape that worked well at first.
They reached Nathan’s hospital, and using a small amount of Adam’s blood, healed Nathan of his injuries. Before they could escape, however, The Company found them. Elle chased after Adam while The Haitian captured Peter.
However, instead of bringing Peter back, The Haitian took Peter’s memories and sent him off in the shipping container where we find Peter during the first episode.
But wait a minute, wasn’t the Haitian already on the run from the Company? The scenario takes place about two months after the explosion – long after he and Mr. Bennett enacted their plan to save Claire and before Mohinder is sent out to heal and retrieve The Haitian. Either someone is playing a deeper game here than previously suspected, or the show’s timeliness has some problems.
While Nathan was still in the hospital, horribly burned, Angela Petrelli convinced Nathan’s wife Heidi that Nathan had a family mental disease and convinced her to stay away from Nathan. Angela may have finally revealed her power, the power of persuasion and coercion.
Finally the event that sent Alejandro and Maya on the run was revealed. Maya discovered her new sister-in-law “tangoing in private” with her ex-boyfriend at Alejandro’s wedding. The ex threatened Maya to try to prevent her from revealing the tryst, but Maya cried her black tears. When she emerged from the back room the wedding party and the wedding guests were all dead, except Alejandro.
Maya fled and became a novice (nun). Alejandro found Maya and turned her in. The police believed that somehow Maya poisoned everyone at the wedding but couldn’t figure out how or with what. Maya reacted to the fear with her powers and struck the police down. For the first time Alejandro reversed the power and they fled together.
The episode ends with Peter fully endowed with all of his missing memories and embarking with Adam on an adventure to “save the world.”
