Boulder offers variety of techniques
It may not be for the timid, but yoga is for those who are spiritually aware, healthy and especially bendy.
In Boulder, yoga is everywhere.
Many places offer different forms of yoga. These alternative types deviate from the normal and more traditional Vinyasa yoga.
Some kinds of yoga that are available here in Boulder include couple’s yoga, Anusara yoga, and Acro Yoga.
Yoga as a practice, originally stems from the Buddhist religion, but has since become a trendy and increasingly common way to exercise and improve strength.
Couple’s Yoga
The Treehouse Yoga Center, located on 737 29th Street offers couple’s yoga “in tandem.” It is a way to include a partner in stretching and strength training.
This kind of yoga is the Vinyasa yoga with poses that are shaped to include two people. According to the center, it is meant for “married couples, partners of all types and friends or family.”
Not intended as a sexual practice, it is meant to be a spiritual connection of both souls and bodies.
Anusara Yoga
Om Time, located in downtown Boulder at 2035 Broadway, offers many specialized yoga classes that are not offered at other places.
Anusara Yoga literally means, “stepping into the flow of grace.” According to Om Time, Anasura yoga a very elective and different yoga experience. It is about awareness and opening up.
“Anusara yoga is about being playful, opening to grace and slowing in the currents,” Sarah Gurganus, an Om Time’s yoga instructor, said.
In addition, Anusura focuses on and caters to the heart. It incorporates moves that integrate the heart and involves poses that improve circulation.
“You do get a work out but it is heart oriented,” Gurganus said. “It allows you to touch into your own personal worth and has a more personal quality to it.”
Acro Yoga
Also offered at Om Time is the highly athletic, Acro Yoga, a combination of both yoga poses and acrobatics. It is a form of yoga that integrates many more involved postures.
“We encourage headstands and handstands, all sorts of movements,” Gurganus said.
Acro Yoga is meant to help active people learn to trust their bodies and their strength. It is about creating a core strength that allows yoga enthusiasts to experience more aerobic and physically straining poses.
