Boulder resevoir explodes for a day of music, sunshine and amphibious landcrafts
The 2007 KBCO/Miller Lite Kinetics festival isn’t just for physics students. Kinetics is for anybody interested in one of Boulder’s largest outdoor parties of the year.
The festival will be held from 6:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. Saturday, May 5, at the Boulder Reservoir. During the eight-hour event, teams test their handmade kinetically designed sculptures against a course that consists of water, land and mud.
A couple of important rules surround the event, which include what kind of sculptures participants can construct. All of the sculptures must be man-powered and they must be centered around a theme, the latter of which usually involves costumes.
The race attracts a variety of sculptures such as boats, floats and kayaks. Along with the reward of building such a creative model, judges hand out over 25 prizes to teams for various accomplishments such as style, critic’s choice and overall engineering.
The popularity of Kinetics has grown over the years. The event usually sees over 10,000 attendees. People come from Boulder and the greater Denver area to partake in the day’s activities. To encourage safety and reduce traffic, free shuttles are provided as a method of transportation for interested patrons.
Though the race is the main event, there is plenty more to keep fans interested. The festival is hosting the musical acts of Los Lonely Boys and Robert Randolph & the Family Band in addition to the many giveaways handed out by local and national vendors.
Presale tickets for the festival cost $20, while buying a ticket the day of the festival costs $25.
