The Fox celebrates 15 years of music
This month marks the 15th anniversary of the Fox Theatre’s opening.
In October of 1991, founders Dicke Sidman, Don Strasburg and Dave Mackenzie created the Fox by transforming an aged movie theater into a premier concert venue.
The Fox hosted its first concerts in March of 1992 with a private performance by Curtis Salgado and the Stilettos and a public performance by the Funky Meters.
Since then, the Fox has reached national status, becoming a staple to the Hill and a main attraction of Boulder.
The Fox marked the anniversary with 10 nights of music, featuring performances by The John Butler Trio, Robert Randolph & the Family Band, Umphrey’s McGee, Big Head Todd & the Monsters, Jeff Austin & Friends and Sam Bush.
The main attraction of the two week celebration was again The Funky Meters.
The Funky Meters are credited with setting the high standard of performances at the Fox Theatre.
The Fox recognized this contribution by welcoming the band back repeatedly over the years and in celebration of the anniversary.
The Fox has contributed to life changing moments in the careers of many musicians over the last 15 years.
The theater is the location where the Dave Matthews Band shot its debut MTV video, “What Would You Say,” in 1994.
It is also the stage where the Fray signed a contract with a major record label two years ago.
Other memorable moments at the Fox include performances by Snoop Dogg, Sublime, John Mayer, Coldplay, Willie Nelson, Phish and Blues Traveler.
In 2002, the Fox became the first establishment on the Hill to be granted “landmark status” by the City of Boulder Landmark Preservation Advisory Board.
The Fox plans on working toward another 15 years of landmark memories, but never leaving any moments behind.
As cofounder Don Strasburg said, “After 15 years looking back, it’s truly amazing to see how many wonderful and amazing experiences have gone on. We therefore know tonight, tomorrow, next week, last week; we’ll hold their place in our memories.”
