A cappella group rings in anniversary with concert, CD release
CU a cappella group In The Buff is celebrating their 13th birthday the only way they know how – with a concert. The event will be Saturday, Feb. 10 at 7:00 p.m. in Math 100. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. but all the group members agreed that showing up early to get a place in the line wouldn’t be a bad idea.
What makes this all-male singing group different from other a cappella groups on campus? It could be that the members not only select all of the music, they also arrange it. The group takes a song, complete with instrumental parts and vocals and turn it into an a cappella piece. It may take more effort on the group’s part, but they feel it’s worth the time to add a little flavor to their music.
In The Buff accomplishes this by changing, adding, and remixing their performance material for every concert. For this birthday bash the group has added seven new songs, all of which have been arranged by the members.
The choreography is also a point of pride for the group. Audience members get a full song and dance show for free, as they are not charging for this concert.
In The Buff invites all of their alumni back to the shows to perform with the group. This is just one of many traditions the group has. Tradition plays a big part of keeping the family feeling to the group.
“They woke me up at four in the morning, dragged me out of bed, and up to Flagstaff,” said Geoff Rubino, a sophomore open-option major and group member.
It seems that, as a new member to the group, Rubino fell victim to the group’s initiation tradition. Rubino is just starting to build his memories of being in In The Buff.
“It’s time to walk away with the memories of being around the group,” said fellow group member and senior sociology major Jared Lincoln.
After all of their practices, the group can be found outside the UMC singing under the arches because it’s tradition.
With music from soul to rock, there’s sure to be something for all musical tastes at In The Buff’s birthday party. A song by The Ramones might even find a place in the musical agenda for the night.
The group will have their new CD, “To Clarity,” on sale that night at the concert, so it’s also a CD release party.
