After the third round of the Wyoming Cowboy Classic in Scottsdale, Ariz. on Tuesday, the CU men’s golf team finished the tournament in a fifth place tie.
The Buffs’ third round didn’t move them up or down on the scoreboard, as they were also tied for fifth after Monday’s first two rounds.
No.50 Baylor won the tournament, finishing 4-under par with an overall team score of 836 for 54 holes. Right behind them was No.64 Arizona with a total of 839. Colorado State and UC-Davis were third and fourth respectively with scores of 841 and 843.
Colorado shared fifth with No.90 Nevada, as both scored 14-over 854 overall.
Although no Buffs scored under par in Tuesday’s third round, the team ranked in the top five in par-5 scoring (third), par-4 scoring (fifth), total pars (fourth), and birdies (fourth).
With only one meet left in the regular season, the CU men hope to earn a berth at the NCAA regionals. To qualify, the team must post at least a .500 record. Currently, Colorado’s record against Division I schools stands at 60-85-3.
The Buffs beat out two top 40 teams on Tuesday: No.20 San Diego in seventh and No.33 Oregon State, a future Pac-12 opponent, in ninth.
CU Head Coach Roy Edwards said the growth he’s seen from his players has been rewarding.
“The guys have done a really good job of getting a little bit better every day,” Edwards said in a news release. “It’s just happened a little bit later than we wanted to, but it is great to see the guys enjoying some success.”
The CU team was led by junior Sebastian Heisele, who tied for 12th place with a total score of even par 210. Heisele’s overall score was a personal collegiate best by four strokes.
Senior Luke Symons was second for the Buffs as he completed his third straight top-25 performance. Symons finished in 23rd place overall with a score of 3-over 213.
Colorado sophomores Derek Fribbs and Pat Wilson shared the 38th spot, scoring 7-over 217, while sophomore Jason Burstyn rounded out the CU score with a 10-over 220. Burstyn’s third round score of even-par 70 was the team’s best, and it moved him from 71st place after the first two rounds to 57th overall.
The Buffs play next at the Western Intercollegiate in Santa Cruz, Calif. in two weeks. That tournament is the last before the Big 12 Championships on April 25.
