It has been three years since the Colorado Buffaloes women’s club lacrosse team left the field with a win against the higher-ranked Colorado State Rams.
CU took a home win over their in-state rivals with a final score of 11-9 on Saturday at Kittredge Field in Boulder. The Buffs consistently outscored the Rams through the entire the game, and CSU only managed to close the gap of 11-4 in the last 20 minutes of regulation.
Besides the excitement of the victory over their archrivals, captain Rebecca Greene said this win also means that the Buffs will probably receive a bid to nationals if they keep playing well.
Greene and fellow team captain Jody Weisenhorn were the leading scorers in the game, Greene with five points and Weisenhorn with three. For these seniors, this win hit close to home.
“CSU has always been the big game of the season,” Greene said. “We all grew up and played in Colorado together, and they were ranked above us, and we haven’t won since our seniors were freshman.”
This game was also a test of teamwork, with three of the Buffs’ leading defenders missing the contest.
“We had three of our starting defenders out with red cards, and our defense really had to step it up,” Weisenhorn said. “We have always just come together as a team, and our team is so cohesive that it meant coming together that one final step.”
The defenders received red cards the game prior, and were required to sit out the next game, which happened to come against the Rams.
Greene attributed this win to her teams ability to handle the pressure that CSU applied, beating them from the midfield, and her teams enthusiasm for an at home win.
“I came into this game really pumped,” Greene said. “I am a senior so it really meant a lot to me and my other seniors to win this game.”
With their next home game coming against BYU on April 26, Colorado’s statement win over Colorado State should help the team gain some momentum to finish the season.
“I think this game was it for us, and I think that this is what it took to show everyone how good we are, and what kind of team we are, and we did it,” Weisenhorn said.
