Three Colorado Buffaloes skiers finished in the top four in the men’s 15-kilometer classical Nordic race to propel the Buffs to the lead in the Montana State Invitational after the first day of competition.
Seniors Matt Gelso and Vegard Kjoelhamar, and junior Jesper Ostensen finished 2-3-4 in the cross country race Friday in Bozeman, Mont. to help the Buffs rack up 245 points. Martin Kaas of New Mexico won the race.
New Mexico is second in the competition with 203 points while Denver is third with 190.
Sophomore Eliska Hajkova was the highest-placed CU skier in the women’s 10k classical race, finishing second and 33 seconds behind winner Antje Maempel of Denver.
Day 2 of the competition continues Saturday with the conclusion of the Nordic races with freestyle as well as the beginning of the alpine events with giant slalom.
