Intramural sports are a good way to start the semester
It’s a new year, a new semester – and a new intramural season.
For CU students looking to break out of their typical cliques, intramural sports offer an easy way to meet new people. With more than 15,000 students and staff participating in the popular intramural sports program each year, it is almost impossible not to meet a new friend.
Kaitlin Moore, a senior film major, has played intramural sports since her freshman year.
“I like to keep up my athletic ability and compete with a team,” Moore said. “I usually play on a team with girls from my sorority, but I always meet new people at games.”
For students lamenting the fact they cannot continue playing their favorite sport in college, the intramural program offers an opportunity to participate in 12 different sports at a minimal time commitment and low level of competitiveness, unlike club or varsity teams. There are no tryouts or official practices, which means no pressure and no stress.
Sarah Abeyta, a senior business major, played on the varsity volleyball team in high school and now participates in intramural women’s volleyball.
“I like being able to stay involved in the sport without the big time commitment,” Abeyta said.
Besides standard team sports like basketball and soccer (indoor and outdoor), CU offers more unique, alternative events such as intramural ice broomball, inner tube water polo, and ultimate Frisbee.
The only downfall to joining an intramural sport is the required fee, which varies by sport depending on the necessary equipment and facilities.
The first registration period for the spring semester is Jan. 22 to 25, and most sports begin on Jan. 28. In April there will be another registration period and the addition of outdoor sports. Students may form a team with friends or join a random team in need of players.
