The Motet is bringing their progressive funk sound to their hometown of Boulder for their annual Halloween show.
The band recently came out with their self-titled seventh full-length studio album. But don’t count on hearing much from the new album in the upcoming gigs. This year the Halloween show is the “Mixtape 1975”, and for two nights at Boulder Theater (Oct. 30 and 31) the improvisational funk collective will be performing some of their favorite songs from that year.
Last year The Motet played multiple nights of their “Mixtape 1980” and included tracks from artists such as The S.O.S band, Queen, Led Zeppelin, Huey Lewis and Bob Marley.
In 1975, KC and The Sunshine Band put out “Get Down Tonight,” Joe Simon published “Get Down, Get Down,” “Fight the Power” by The Isley Brothers hit the charts and performers such as Elton John, David Bowe and Earth, Wind and Fire were all in full groove.
This summer at Red Rocks, The Motet previewed the “Mixtape 1975” when they opened for Umphrey’s McGee and gave another glimpse of their funk when several members were the live band for Big Gigantic at Red Rocks. EDM shows, like the Big Gigantic show, are the entire dance scene in Colorado. The Motet’s afrobeat soul funk shows that not only is funk not dead, but it is all the dance fodder anyone will need.
Doors at Boulder Theater open at 8:30 p.m. both nights and DJ Mikey Thunder will start things off at 9:30 p.m. But if this year is like last year, The Motet will bring the funk out by about 10:30 p.m. Tickets for Friday have long sold out, but there are still some available for the show on the Thursday and for Nov. 1 at The Ogden Theater in Denver.
