CU Police are investigating a string of thefts at the Rec Center and have made one arrest so far.
CUPD has been investigating numerous reports of theft from lockers at the Rec Center for the past three months, according to a news release.
On Jan. 21, Jonathan Hughes, a 20-year-old from Louisville, was reported by a witness as trying to break into the witness’ locker. He was arrested Monday at 5 p.m. in connection with the thefts.
CUPD Cmdr. Tim McGraw said the witness report helped with the arrest.
“Early afternoon on Friday [Hughes] was seen trying to get into a locker,” McGraw said. “A man reported what he had seen to an employee of the Rec Center. On Monday the man returned to the Rec Center where that same employee recognized him and called the police.”
Hughes was brought to Boulder County Jail where officers filed four counts of Third Degree Burglary and four counts of Theft under $500.
McGraw said that the investigation has led them to believe Hughes could be responsible for these counts.
“Officers investigated and developed a cause to think that he was involved in multiple violations,” Mcgraw said.
McGraw said they believe others are involved with these crimes but as of right now, Hughes is the only one in custody.
