Students and staff are allowed to reenter the Center for Community building after a fire alarm, according to Boulder Police and Fire Dispatch.
Housing and Dining Services staff member Patrick Brunner, a 20-year-old architecture major, said smoke from a panini press set off the alarm.
“Someone must have left a panini on the press and walked away,” Brunner said. “The smoke from the press set off the fire alarm.”
Brunner said he did not see or smell any smoke and that the damage was minimal.
“I saw the press afterwards and nothing melted,” he said. “There was just a big, dark spot in the middle of the press where it used to be all clean and shiny. They ended up lucking out I think.”
After the evacuation the Center for Community dining hall reopened for students in order for them to finish their meals, said Brunner.
Brunner also said the Center for Community will install a temperature control for the panini press as a future safety precaution.
“I’m glad it didn’t turn into something worse,” Brunner said.
