A new set of student government representatives are gearing up for the next legislative season.
The Empower ticket picked up victories across the board for leadership positions on the School of Engineering board, University of Colorado Student Union and the Arts & Sciences Student Government.
A hand full of independents (who did not run on the two big tickets: Empower and Veritas) picked up spots including Travis Krogman, a board member for the Arts & Sciences Student Government, and various Representatives for the School of Engineering.
A common goal for the new student government leaders is to tackle fiscal responsibility and develop student group funding. Leah Neumann, a junior finance major and new Representative-at-Large, said money management will be at the top of her list while in office.
“My goal is fiscal responsibility. I feel there is a disconnect between the clubs and what students actually want,” Neumann said. “I want to make sure the students get what they want and that we use their funds wisely.”
Sam John, a 21-year old senior philosophy and economics major and Representative-at- Large, said he wants to rework how student groups are funded.
John said that some recent Colorado legislative initiatives have limited opportunities for student group funding, including one piece of legislation that banned mandatory student fees.
“My number one goal is to give students some other options to get funding,” John said.
Rodrigo Gonzalez, a senior Chemical and Biological Engineering major and newly elected Representative-at-Large, also said that student funding is his biggest focus for next year. Gonzalez served on the UCSU Finance Board Chair and said he now wants to reform the student group funding board.
“One of my biggest goals is to reform the student group funding board and continue making CU a sustainable school because it helps save money and increases the reputation of our school,” Gonzalez said.
An initiative to change the name of UCSU to University of Colorado Student Government was also passed with the hope of improving student familiarity with CU’s student government.
