About the only thing sweeter than winning is setting records.
Colorado Buffaloes junior Alex Von Hagen ran past Wyoming’s Jay Petsch in the final heptathlon event of the day, the 1,000-meter run, to win the heptathlon Saturday in the Potts Indoor Invitational at Balch Fieldhouse.
Von Hagen trailed by 113 points heading into the final event, but he won the race in two minutes, 46.59 seconds while Petsch came in fourth at 2:59.64. Von Hagen tallied 4,995 points, 21 more than Petsch, in a new personal and Balch Fieldhouse record.
“As a group we are pretty good at the 1,000 and 1,500, so it is kind of like an ace up our sleeves,” Von Hagen said in a news release. “I felt really confident going into the last event since I did know the point differential and that I just had to beat him by 11 seconds.”
Freshman Emily Hunsucker became the second CU woman in a row to win the shot put at Potts. Her 41-foot, 5-inch throw bested Colorado State’s Hilary Fraser.
“This feels great,” Hunsucker said in a news release. “It feels nice to be able to get back in the swing of things with my technique and a couple of other things that coach and I were working on.”
Seven other Buffs also won individual events.
• Redshirt freshman Matthew Biegner took the men’s 1-mile run in 4:26.90.
• Freshman Shalaya Kipp won the women’s 1-mile run in 5:13.93.
• Freshman Sydney Davis bested the women’s 200-meter dash in 27.08.
• Sophomore Javen Correia topped the men’s 60-meter hurdles in 8.56.
• Freshman Tyler Thompson had more hang time in the men’s long jump at 22-05.
• Senior Kathleen Majewski and freshman Laurisa Canini shared the honor with CSU’s Ashley Dace of who had more hops in the women’s high jump at 5-02 1/4.
