When people get bored with their weekend shooters routine, they often turn to Jell-o shots in an effort to mix up the madness. The simple tips below will guide one towards Jello-o shot success.
While many students know about the shot, not many know how to make them or even drink one.
“I’ve never actually done a Jell-o shot,” said Roane Buja, a senior English major.
However, that can all change with this handy guide by this CU Independent reporter.
Step 1: Jell-o flavors
First, go hit up the baking aisle at the grocery store, and look over the many flavor options of Jell-o. Some of the favorite options to choose are: cherry, lime, strawberry and grape. Feeling brave? Mix it up with some more unique flavors: raspberry, margarita, cranberry and berry blue.
“Lime is my favorite flavor of Jell-o shot, with Bloody Mary in hand,” said Dylan Gantley, a sophomore business major.
Step 2: Alcohol of choice
The most common choice of liquor for Jell-o shots is usually vodka, but a light rum will also work. The best option is to pick a favorite brand of alcohol, because the leftovers can be used in more cocktails throughout the night. Use potato vodka and all the friends needing a gluten-free option will be able to enjoy as well.
Step 3: Plastic, not paper
This is an important step that can make or break the success of a Jell-o shot. Nothing is worse than putting all the effort into amazing flavored shot, and not being able to get it out of the cup. Be sure not to use glass shots or paper cups. It’s best to use clear small plastic cups.
Step 4: Proper portions
While strong shots are often preferred, too much alcohol will leave the Jell-o unable to settle. According to the Web site Drink Street, the proportion of alcohol and cold water is imperative to the quality of the shot. The proof of alcohol matters also, the higher the proof the more cold water is necessary for it to set.
Step 5: Mixing it up
1 6oz. package of Jell-o
1 cup of boiling water
˝ cup of cold water
2 1/2 cups of alcohol (suggested 80 proof alcohol)
Add the package Jell-o to the cup of boiling water. After is dissolves, add ˝ of cold water and the 2 ˝ cups of alcohol. Mix it all up, and pour into small plastic cups. Then place in the fridge to setup.
“So what is key in Jell-o shot making is to be sure the Jell-o powder is dissolved in boiling water [to completely dissolve the gelatin] -otherwise they won’t set well,” said Stephanie Weber, a Manager at the Financial Service Center.
Step 5: Display the Jell-o shots on a nice platter or serve around the table, making sure that no one goes overboard on these gentle shooters- they go down with ease but pack the punch of any other liquored beverage.
