Students walking past Norlin Quad Friday were greeted by a sobering sight: thousands of American flags set up to commemorate the eighth anniversary of 9/11.
“I’m glad there’s something simple and visual to remember this today,” said Boulder resident Don Morrissey, seen walking among the flags and talking to his daughter, whom he said was two years old when the attack occurred.
The terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001 claimed almost 3,000 lives. The flags, one for each victim, were planted by the College Republicans in the grass on Norlin Quad. A sign is set up that reads, “In loving memory of the 2,977 victims of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks,” and states that the memorial had been “donated by the College Republicans and the Boulder County Republican Party.”
“We’re just doing it because we want to honor and remember all the victims of the terrorist attack in 2001,” said Gregory Carlson, the 20-year-old chairman of the College Republicans who is also a senior math, economics and political science major. “We didn’t mean to make any political point at all with this, it’s just to try to remember.”
