Boulder, you have just been punk’d.
After a supposed three-week quarterback competition between junior Cody Hawkins and sophomore Tyler Hansen, it seems as if there was no competition at all at fall camp, as Hansen will redshirt the 2009 season.
The announcement came Monday from Hansen, following CU’s 23-17 season opener loss to Colorado State on Sunday night.
Hansen said that offensive coordinator Eric Kiesau talked to him three weeks ago about possibly redshirting the season if he didn’t win the starting job in order to save a year of eligibility.
However, just like last year, the possibility of pulling the redshirt off Hansen still remains if Hawkins suffers a season long injury early in the year or is out during a close game.
With other minor injuries to Hawkins or in the event of blowout games, freshmen Clark Evans, Seth Lobato, or Jerry Slota would step in as QB.
However, the highly touted Evans from Los Alamitos, Calif. is expected to redshirt this season as well, leaving in-state walk-ons Lobato and Slota to fill in for Hawkins.
A No. 3 quarterback has yet to be decided, but it seems like Hansen will still be considered back-up, as he’s the only one with game experience as he went 34-for-65 passing with one touchdown and four interceptions in five games last season.
