The Colorado Buffaloes soccer team made history.
Recovering from a loss to ranked Illinois on Friday, CU returned to winning form with a historic victory Sunday, defeating St. Mary’s 8-1 during the last day of the DU invitational in Denver.
Senior Nikki Marshall netted two goals, including an unassisted goal 23 seconds after the opening whistle. It was the fastest recorded goal in the program’s history.
Marshall’s second goal would follow two minutes later, after a corner kick by senior Ally Goodman.
The Buffs guaranteed their win after overwhelming the St. Mary’s defense with five goals in less than 30 minutes of play in the first half. Sophomore Kelly Butler scored two goals, and sophomore Kassidy Fitzpatrick, who scored CU’s lone goal against Illinois, also netted a goal in the 25th minute.
St. Mary’s’ own goal in the 42nd minute would be followed eight minutes later by freshman Amy Barczuk’s goal in the 50th minute. Freshmen Quinn Krier would end the rout, and break CU’s record of goals scored in a match, with her goal in the 80th minute.
CU’s previous biggest win was against Texas Tech on Oct. 17, 2004, after the Buffaloes decimated the Red Raiders 7-0.
The Buffs improve to 2-1 overall on the season, and return home to face Denver at Prentup Field Friday at 4 p.m.
