Despite a current rocky economic situation, CU Career Services are helping students find summer jobs and internships.
“A little bit of everything [is available],” said Lisa Severy, director of Career Services at CU. “There are administration assistant positions, research sciences, retail. There are on campus, off campus, close to home jobs. Our system is individualized.”
Severy also said there are numerous resources for student employment on the Career Services Web site. She says counselors are available to help students create a workable resume.
Severy also said wages and hours vary and there should be positions for students even if they are taking summer classes.
“In general any experience is good—try to find a job in a field you want to do,” Severy said. “A job can be like an internship to help you see what you like or dislike. In the long run, finding a summer job in your career could be beneficial to you.”
Sheldon Coutinho, a graduating senior engineering major at CU, says he plans to work in his field of interest as a research assistant to a professor of aerospace engineering.
“I’m excited to do it,” Coutinho said. “I always wanted to work for the professor. He is really cool.”
Jordan Dicksteen, a 17-year-old freshman, says he also plans to work in Boulder this summer as a prep cook full time at the Gold Hill Inn.
“I’m really excited,” Dicksteen said. “It took me 10 months to find a job.”
Dicksteen also said cooking is a hobby that he enjoys but is not planning on pursuing in the future.
Rachel Skorenki, a 21-year old junior integrative physiology major, says she has plans to work at the YMCA in as she has in past summers.
“I like the benefit of getting a free membership, as well as the people,” Skorenki said.
Kate Mulligan, a 20-year-old integrated physiology major, says she is not sure if she is working this summer, but if she does she will be at Noodles & Company in Boulder.
“I enjoy it,” Mulligan said. “I did it last summer and am excited to do it again.”
