The former UMC worker arrested for allegedly attacking a CU freshman with a knife is set for an arraignment in April, but the case still may not proceed.
A preliminary hearing was held for Kenton Astin at 2:30 p.m. Thursday in the Boulder Court House. Astin is facing possible charges of first-degree attempted murder and first-degree assault after allegedly attacking then-freshmen Michael Knorps with a knife on the first day of the fall 2007 school year. However, in several court hearings since, Astin has been found “incompetent to proceed,” and has been held in the Colorado Mental Health Institute in Pueblo Colorado.
At the hearing, it was found that there was probable cause that the case should proceed for both charges, and the case was bound over to district court. An arraignment was set for April 3 at 1 p.m.
However, defense attorney Mathew Connell remarked Astin is due for a competency hearing soon, and that it would be a “wasted trip” for Astin to come to Boulder from Pueblo before the hearing.
The case cannot proceed unless Astin is found competent to stand trial.
