Throughout the month of February, the Center for Multicultural Affairs, a division of the Office of Diversity, Equity and Community Engagement, is honoring Black History Month by offering an entertaining and educational series of activities for students, faculty and the greater Boulder community.
Academic and Program Coordinator Debbie Frazier encourages everyone in the CU and Boulder community to attend at least one or two of these events so they can “get a taste of history” while having fun.
“We open it up for everyone to learn and generate ideas,” Frazier said. “We want everyone to have a voice, participate, enjoy and share their thoughts and opinions.”
Though four of these Black History Month events have already taken place this month, there are still many more activities that will occur in the next few weeks both on and off campus.
Some of the events that take place during this month include a Meet and Greet reception sponsored by the Black Student Alliance, an Afro-Cuban dance class, and the fourteenth annual CU Boulder Diversity Summit.
Sophomore psychology and ethnic studies major Ke’Ona Willis attended Tuesday’s “Black Woman in Activism” discussion, which was sponsored by the Women’s Resource Center.
Like Frazier, Willis encourages students to attend diversity events offered on our campus.
“There’s never a lot of things pertaining to minorities, and the fact that we do have a month and there’s events going on every week of that month is great,” Willis said.
Like Willis, freshman Cindy Mendez, an English and psychology major, feels that these events help remind students about the importance of promoting diversity on CU’s campus.
Mendez even has a suggestion of her own for students interested in attending any of these events.
“I like the heritage events because they are very interactive and really show you what peoples’ cultures are all about,” Mendez said.
These events have been scheduled to get students involved and informed.
“This is a time for all of us to share in the heritage and celebrate black history,” Frazier said.
