Lions and Patriots take CU seniors
CU football players Jordon Dizon and Terrence Wheatley were both selected in the second round of the 2008 NFL Draft on Saturday.
The Detroit Lions drafted Dizon, a senior inside linebacker, in the middle of the second round. Dizon was the No. 14 pick in the second round and the No. 45 pick overall.
The New England Patriots drafted Wheatley, a senior cornerback, late in the second round. Wheatley was the No. 31 pick in the second round and the No. 62 pick overall.
Many experts predicted that Wheatley would be selected on the second day of the draft, saying that his speed would give him a big advantage.
Dizon was expected to go in a later round of the draft as well because of his relatively small size.
Dizon was named the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year in 2007 with 160 tackles, seven tackles resulting in losses, four sacks, a forced fumble and three pass breakups. He was also one of two runner-ups for the 2007 Butkus award.
According to the CU Althletic Department, running back Hugh Charles and offensive tackle Tyler Polumbus are generally considered by draft experts as the other Buffs most likely to be selected this weekend.
The second day of the draft will begin at 8 a.m. on Sunday and will be televised on ESPN.
