Tournment begins Friday
The Colorado women’s golf team will compete in the Big 12 Tournament from Friday through Sunday. With a spot in the NCAA West Regional hanging in the balance, the team know they have to be prepared for big competition, senior Lindsay Senger said.
“Being a conference championship, this is really important,” Senger said. “Whoever wins will automatically advance to regionals, so it’s important to play well.”
This season, the Buffs have compiled a record filled with ups and downs. After winning their own CU Heather Farr Memorial Invitational and placing third in the Texas Tech Invitational back in October, the Buffs have slipped in the rankings.
Since they began competing again in February, the Buffs have yet to place within the top five at a competition. Senger said she knows they face a challenge going into this meet with their current record, but they are trying to not let if affect them.
“We’ve put a lot of work in all semester and haven’t had the results we would have liked,” Senger said. “We’re trying to look at this tournament a little differently and not expecting to place high, but expecting to place well.”
The Big 12 Tournament will be held April 25-27 in Stillwater, Okla. Senger said the team has been resting and focusing on the course in Stillwater. Head coach Anne Kelly said in a press release that she remains hopeful the team will be competitive.
“I definitely know that the course is extremely tough and challenging .. We will have to make sure that we keep hitting the ball straight and play smart golf that works to our advantage,” Kelly said.
Senger said there is no specific team standing out as tough competition.
“We stack up really well to all the teams in the Big 12, so we’re not really nervous about one team,” Senger said. “Oklahoma State would have the advantage because it is their home golf course.”
