Cody Hawkins launches bid for ASSG
CU quarterback Cody Hawkins will be running for a seat in the Arts and Science Student Government in the upcoming April UCSU elections.
“I’m confident he’ll get out there and get the vote,” said Chance Heath, a junior international affairs major and UCSU representative-at-large who will run with Hawkins.
Though Hawkins, a sophomore open option major, could not immediately be reached for comment, Heath said he felt Hawkins was a strong candidate and that he would do well in the upcoming elections.
“Anytime you run somebody who is well-known and well respected, it definitely helps their electability,” Heath said.
Heath, who is running for a Tri-Executive position alongside sophomore fine arts major Sarah Martinez and senior finance major Piers Blyth, said his ticket wants to be representative of the entire student body, and that having Hawkins helps with that goal.
“I think the primary message about our ticket is we’re trying to reach out to represent everyone on campus, and having [Cody] brings a unique aspect to that,” Heath said.
Some concerns have been raised about Hawkins’ ability to balance his time between student government and his athletic career.

“I hope his dad knows how much time is going to be required,” said UCSU Tri-Executive Charles Gilford.
Dan Hawkins, Cody Hawkins’ father, is the head coach of the CU football team.
Gilford also said Hawkins needs to be aware of the time commitment involved in serving on UCSU and that it might interfere with his athletic activities. He added that Hawkins was a “phenomenal” quarterback and that serving on UCSU might detract from his focus on getting into the NFL.
“I’m not sure he knows what he’s getting into,” Gilford said.
Heath was confident that Hawkins would be able to handle his duties should he be elected.
“Arts and Science Student Government is a pretty low time commitment,” Heath said. “If there’s a conflict in the fall, he can work out how to balance it.”
Petitions for the Tri-Executive tickets were also released Monday.
Running with the Solidarity ticket will be sophomore pre-journalism and mass communication major Brittany Havey, sophomore open option major Michael Mazzone and freshman open option major John Rineck.
Junior international affairs major Chance Heath, sophomore fine arts major Sarah Martinez and senior finance major Piers Blyth make up the ONE ticket.
The third and final ticket for Tri-Executive includes senior political science major Ryan Biehle, junior communication major Victoria Garcia and junior political science major Dustin Farivar.
The students will meet on Wednesday to be officially recognized as candidates.
