Take the bus on St. Patrick’s Day
Students looking for a way to get home after St. Patrick’s Day celebrations will have a safe means of transportation thanks to Late Night Transit.
Late Night Transit has changed bus routes throughout Boulder in order to provide better access to bus system. Three different bus lines now run between CU, Twenty Ninth Street Mall and downtown. All routes run along Broadway as well.
Peter Roper, program manager of the Sustainable Transportation Program at CU, said the new routes are designed to help students arrive at their destinations in a faster more efficient way. He also said the new efficiency has helped to reduce previous vandalism to the buses.
“We want students to be off the buses quicker,” Roper said. “Previously, we’ve had a lot of issues with vandalism, and that’s why we’ve restructured the routes.”
Roper said students using the services of the HOP and Late Night Transit have increased to approximately 20 percent with the route changes.
“The average use varies between nights, but around 400 to 500 students use the services,” HOP supervisor Rich Wildau said.
The new routes provide access to areas like the Twenty Ninth Street Mall and the downtown Pearl Street area. The highest usage is the Euclid route towards The Hill.
“Quite a number of students are using it – about 95 percent are students,” Wildau said.
Route maps are displayed at every bus stop located on campus. Pocket maps and schedules have also been distributed to increase student awareness.
“I learned about the Late Night transportation in the bus and ended up using it,” said Nicole Palovick, sophomore architecture major and resident of the Hill. “The driver was very friendly and dropped each of us off at our destinations. I think it’s a great program and keeps a lot of students from drinking and driving. It’s the safer way to go.”
The HOP will run from 7 a.m. to 12 a.m. on St. Patrick’s Day. Late Night Transit will run from 12 a.m. to 3 a.m. on the night of St. Patrick’s Day.
