A new shooter for the Xbox 360
Game developer Bizarre Creations’ “The Club” takes aim at the crowded first-person shooter genre, but does not quite hit the target.
The developer is known for the Project Gotham Racing series and took on the shooting genre for something new on the Xbox 360.
In “The Club,” the gamer chooses between eight characters and has to perform certain tasks of survival. A group of people known as The Club gamble on who will survive each task of action combat.
Some of the tasks in the game include running a gauntlet in a certain time, running laps around a course with dangerous enemies along the way and surviving in small spaces. The maps are fun and each area has a map for every task.
The game stays interesting through obtaining combos. Shooting things in a fast pace earns the gamer combos, which earn more points and ultimately sets a high pace to the game. Variables such as remaining health and time at the end of each task also help add up points. At the end of each tournament, the points are added together and new features are unlocked for the player.
The game plays as a third-person shooter style, which means the camera shows over the right shoulder of the character. The arsenal is impressive with various weapons from pistols to mini-guns and each character has specific speed, strength and stamina stats, which means players have a unique experience with each character.
Ultimately “The Game” is an arcade shooter game that is very intense and fun to play. The graphics and the music are not the best example of what’s for the Xbox 360 and at times leave something to be desired. The intelligence of the enemies in the game is not that great either. They do not do much more than shoot and move around a bit.
The online game play is not as popular as “Call of Duty 4” or “Halo 3” and games are limited to eight players at once. Skill is definitely required when playing online, and getting kills really comes down to getting head shots because body shots do not cause enough significant damage.
This game is not worth $60 but is worth at least a weekend rental so players can experience what Bizarre Creations can bring from the racing genre and put into the first-person shooter.
