It’s all about body type
The right pair of jeans can make a huge difference in someone’s look and knowing which style of jeans to buy can really add some style to a wardrobe.
“I try on at least twenty pairs of denim before making my final selection and wear them for a week with the tags on to ensure that they hold up in real life,” said Kenna Stoneman, a sophomore international affairs major.
Finding your perfect designer jeans doesn’t need to be hard, especially if you know which styles and brands fit your body type.
The Tall Girl:
Tall girls can generally wear anything.
“Diesels and Rock and Republics generally look great on taller girls,” said Alberto Douriet, a sophomore political science major and assistant manager at Weekends Denim Boutique on Pearl Street. “These brands generally run really long because of their inseam.”
Some other great brands for the ladies with long legs include Paige Premium Denim and True Religion.
For those not looking to spend much money for denim, another great brand to try would be Lucky Brand Jeans. They have a great price, usually running $100 less than most designer jeans.
Petite Girl:
“It’s hard because all denim runs really long on my legs but will fit everywhere else perfectly fine,” said Alana Wilbur, a junior broadcast news major.
A lot of places are willing to provide complimentary alterations for their customers such as Weekend Denim and Nordstrom.
“We offer complimentary alterations for full priced denim and charge $18 for any sale denim,” Douriet said.
For those who are looking for alterations for previously purchased denim or pants, give a call to a dry cleaners or tailor.
Some brands even make petite fits for their most popular fits. Several denim companies make petite fit jeans including Joe’s Jeans, Paige Premium Denim and Sevens. These petite fits can be purchased at Nordstrom’s Web site .
The Girl with Curves:
“I find it difficult to find great denim because all women have unique bodies and unique curves,” said Meredith Casciato, a sophomore open-option major.
Being a girl with curves shouldn’t have to be a difficult barrier to overcome when trying to find some great jeans.
“True Religions are a great fit for girls with curves,” Douriet said.
The perk to these jeans is they fit comfortably for the curvy body type.
“I like True Religions because they sit nicely and don’t cut into my hips and give a muffin top,” Wilbur said.
For those who do not like the style of True Religions, James Jeans are worth looking into.
“James Jeans are also great for curvy bodies,” Douriet said. “They run a little big so get a size smaller and they will stretch with wear.”
The Honey Curvy Fit, which is from Joe’s Jeans, also fits those with curves well. This style specializes in contouring the curves of a woman and has enough room in the back for girls with extra booty.
“Generally when looking for jeans for a girl with curves, look for denim with a higher rise, especially in the back,” Douriet said.
A thicker band around the waist is important for girls because that prevents any contouring on the hips that ultimately extinguishes the infamous muffin top.
Also, those who do not want to make their booty look bigger should stay away from embellished pockets or anything with fading on the back.
Denim Trends and Washes:
While the fit is very important in picking the right pair of denim, it is also important to pick the right look.
“Light washes are going to be really popular this spring,” Douriet said.
Light washes are great to have for kick around denim, meaning they are great for that t-shirt and jean day look or for going to class.
“Darker denim is always great to have for going out or dressing something up,” Doureit said.
Dark denim is always great to have because it’s so easy to dress up and dress down. Darker denim is also really flattering because it won’t emphasize curves and even tends to elongate the legs.
Another great cut of denim that is going to be very popular for spring is the trouser cut.
Trouser style is a great cut because they are very sophisticated looking in a darker wash and can dress up any outfit. They run a little higher than normal, which makes them very flattering on a lot of body types.
Trousers are also super light and airy which makes them very comfortable to wear, especially during the spring.
