New staggered meal plan in dorms set to begin in February
CU’s Residence Hall Association, and Housing and Dining Services, are in the process of putting together a staggered meal plan set to begin in February of 2008.
“This is a simple change that really opens up the variety,” said Dining Services Director Amy Beckstrom. “It’s an easy way to accomplish students needs.”
Currently, there are five main dining centers on campus. Though each dining hall offers some variety with what it serves, there is one main meal offered each day, which is the same at all dining centers.
The staggered meal plan will change this.
“If I wanted a grilled cheese on Monday it might be in Farrand, then for the rest of the week it will move around campus,” said Kylee Wasechek, a freshmen integrative physiology major and Kittredge Hall President.
Completely changing the way dining halls do business is quite complex.
“When the RHA came with the request for a staggered meal plan it sounded easy, but the technology needed to be adjusted,” Beckstrom said. “One great thing about technology is getting students to utilize the Web site. They have the ability to see what’s on the menu with the click of a button.”
Although plans for the staggered meal plan are not finalized, Beckstrom is optimistic of its completion.
“If our information technology department stays on track, and there are no unforeseen barriers, then it will happen in February,” said Beckstrom.
Wasechek hopes that the new system will have all the kinks worked out by next August.
“People next year will benefit more, though we pretty much have an entire semester to try out the new menu,” Wasechek said. “We are kind of like the guinea pigs.”
Many students are completely unaware of the change in menu. However, the ones that know are excited.
“If I can eat a grilled cheese three days a week instead of just one, then that’s awesome,” said Kathryn Lehman, a sophomore history major living in Stearns East.
