Rally at UMC raises awareness
The Sigma Psi Zeta Incorporated sorority held a rally last Wednesday night at the UMC fountain to raise awareness about sexual assault.
The rally was titled “Take Back the Night,” and the sorority set up speakers and a microphone to inform the attending crowd about their cause. Along with the verbal information, the group also set up a tri-fold board with factual information regarding violence against women and pictures of the sorority’s members.
“Our main goal today is to simply just bring awareness to sexual assault,” said Sarah Hwang, a senior integrative physiology major and sorority member. “One in every four women in America are sexually assaulted; it’s a very big problem.”
After the informational portion of the rally was over, the group marched around campus with signs chanting things like, “We have the power, we have the right, the streets are ours, take back the night.” The sorority and their followers marched all around campus, at places like Farrand Field and the Wardenburg Health Center.
“Take Back the Night” is part of the sorority’s philanthropy on fighting to combat violence against women. Sigma Psi Zeta is a multicultural Asian interest sorority at CU and was the first of its kind founded in the state of Colorado. Along with their ultimate goal of raising awarness about violence against women, the sorority also holds events to educate the student body about the Asian cultures.
