Kittridge West resident had two guns and a knife seized
Matthew Furnish, a freshman international affairs major who was arrested on April 19 following a police seizure of two guns and a knife from his Kittridge West dorm room, was formally charged Wednesday with three felonies and a misdemeanor.
Furnish was charged with three felony counts of illegal possession of weapons, which include the two firearms and the knife. The additional misdemeanor charge of unlawful conduct on public property is due to Furnish having weapons in the dorm.
The CU Police Department received an anonymous tip last Thursday evening reporting that a resident of the Kittridge West dorm had weapons in his room, including “a gun.” Officers searched Furnish’s room and seized a Glock .40 caliber handgun, a Remington 12-gauge shotgun, several hundred rounds of ammunition, magazine clips for weapons and a knife with a 12-inch blade.
According to police, Furnish was arrested on two counts of unlawful possession of deadly weapons on campus and three counts of unlawful conduct on public property. He was taken to Boulder County Jail and issued a suspension from CU.
Furnish’s attorney remains adamant that the student had brought the weapons to campus to go target shooting with friends on April 20.
Furnish has been banned from the CU campus until his judicial affairs hearing is complete.
