Class of 2009 unable to create field memories of their own
Being a freshman on campus, and one who lives in Farrand Hall, I find it extremely annoying that the campus chose this year to tear down and reconstruct Farrand Field.
I know I am not the only one who feels this way seeing as my roommate, as well as everyone else on my floor (and likely my residence hall) is thoroughly annoyed with this decision.
Since about a week into school this year I wake up to the lovely sounds of construction workers and loud machinery, every morning around 8 a.m. For those of you who want a clearer picture, just imagine a time when you walked by a construction site and had to scream to your friend next to you “WHAT DID YOU SAY?” Well take that sound and put it behind a glass window (trust me, this doesn’t muffle the sound well), and then you have what I wake up to every morning.
My favorite part of this whole experience is when I am walking back from class around noon, and I see about three construction workers (the only three in sight), and none of them are working. My automatic response is, “um, do you really expect to finish this project by August if none of you are working?” I know others think this too because I continually joke about it with my friends who walk the same route.
I think what irritates me the most is all of the upperclassmen I talk to who openly reminisce about the times they would lay out on Farrand Field their freshman year and take naps, do homework, do other things I’m not going to mention, etc. See, this just depresses me because I do not get to share in this experience my freshman year, and you’re only a freshman in college once right? Farrand Field is in such a great location for freshmen. Farrand, Libby, Baker and Cheyenne Arapaho dorms are all circling the field, making it the prime hang out spot during down time. Norlin and Kittredge quads are just way too far away.
I do agree having a way cool amphitheatre on campus is going to be sweet. It will be nice to have a place where bands can play on campus, and maybe other forms of live entertainment. However, couldn’t they have chosen a different year? My favorite complaint is the rage of the student body that they won’t be able to celebrate 420 on Farrand Field this year, but hey, word is they are choosing another field.
All in all I’m just saying that when they are finished with the construction, it better look amazing, and there better be plenty of green grass to lie on for the future years of freshman so they do not feel as deprived as I did this year.
