Renowned comedic cast contributes to film’s amusing nature
“Blades of Glory” premiered last Thursday night on the CU campus and the crowd was full of laughter for the majority of the sneak preview.
The room was packed to capacity with an audience anticipating another film in the series of cliche, over-the-top sports movies starring Will Ferrell. Ferrell and Jon Heder, of “Napoleon Dynamite,” combined to form one of the most hilarious duos in the history of film.
The story begins with Jimmy MacElroy (Heder) and Chazz Michael Michaels (Ferrell) as competing figure skaters who were banned from the sport after they fought following the most important event of the year.
A series of flashbacks leads up to the main plot, which depicts MacElroy as an orphan boy taken in by skating guru Darren MacElroy, played by William Fichtner, and Michaels, who as a sexed-up porn star moonlights as a male figure skater.
After the debacle, the two rival skaters find a loophole in the skating federation rulebook and are able to compete in the World Championships, under the condition they compete as doubles. Led by their coach, played by Craig T. Nelson, the two skaters come together and fight for victory.
The subsequent events would prove to be some of the most hilarious moments in Will Ferrell’s history as a comedic actor.
Every other line was followed by uproarious laughter from the crowd and Will Ferrell’s funniest movie, “Talledega Nights,” was soon put on the back of the shelf.
“Man, that movie was hilarious,” said Kevin Beck, a senior architecture major. “‘Blades of Glory’ was definitely his best movie, it completely surpassed any expectations I had when I saw the preview.”
As the story progresses, Heder falls in love with Katie, played by Jenna Fisher. Her brother and sister, Stranz and Fairchild Van Waldenberg, are the duo’s rivals and send her on a mission to have sex with Farrell and Heder in an effort to distract them from their goal.
As time goes on, the plot line becomes more ridiculous and the crowd was unable to contain their laughter.
After a series of mishaps, Ferrell and Heder eventually make it to the final event and for the first time, perform the only trick that has never been performed in the history of competitive skating: the “iron lotus.”
With each of their heads buried deeply in the other’s crotch, this trick will make you laugh even if you don’t have a funny bone in your body.
The trick gives them the prestige they desire and allows the two skaters to take home the gold. “Blades of Glory” created laughter throughout the crowd and fans of Ferrell will not be disappointed.
“I loved it,” said Janine Allen, a freshman open-option major. “I haven’t laughed that hard in my entire life, anyone who likes Will Ferrell will love this movie.”
“Blades of Glory” opens nationwide this Friday.
