Going into his senior season, tail back Hugh Charles wants to run the ball with attitude this year.
“Attitude is everything. We got to run hard. We’re going to be a downhill, physical offense,” Charles said.
Last season, Charles rushed for 779 yards and averaged 5.6 yards per attempt, but only scored one rushing touchdown. Charles talked about the difficulty the team faced last season and the new head coach the Buffs received.
“Last season was a learning experience. It’s tough to come into a season with new coaches and expect everybody to do what their supposed to do,” Charles said.
Charles said that he had two different coaches in high school, so the Buffs’ coaching change was familiar territory for him. But going into his senior year, Charles is looking to make some big offensive strides.
The 2007 season will be a different year for the 5-foot 8-inch tail back.
“My senior season is definitely going to be better than last season,” Charles said. “I just know what I’m doing now. The older you get, the smarter you are and experience is everything,”
The upcoming season will also be different for the entire team, Charles said.
“Now starting this spring, I feel everybody is grasping concepts and what we have to offer defense and offense wise,” Charles said.
The biggest thing the Buffs need to work on this next season is to maintain some consistency in the running game. One rushing touchdown by the team’s leading rusher is not going to cut it next year.
As Charles(cq) reflected on his time at CU, he talked about the player who really showed him what Buffs’ football was all about.
“Bobby (Purify) was really my guidance because he was in front of me,” Charles said. “He pretty much showed me the ropes.”
