A new study revealed that between 2019 and 2023, adventure motorcyclists in Colorado faced the fifth-highest risk of fatal crashes in the United States.
The research conducted by DeHoyos Accident Attorneys analyzed fatal crash data from the Federal Crash Data Query Tool (CDAN) across all 50 states from 2019 to 2023. The study measured Average Fatal Adventure Motorcyclist Crashes per Million Residents, with higher numbers indicating a greater fatality risk on state roads.
Colorado ranks fifth with an average of 0.89 fatal adventure motorcyclist crashes per million residents, 154% higher than the national average of 0.35 fatal adventure motorcyclist crashes per million residents. Among its 5,814,712 residents, the Centennial State recorded an annual average of 5.2 fatal crashes between 2019 and 2023. The highest crash count occurred in 2022 with eight fatalities, while the lowest was three in 2020.
Looking at the study, a spokesperson from DeHoyos Accident Attorneys commented:
“Colorado’s elevated risk stems from its mountainous topography and heavy tourist traffic. Riders face challenges like sudden temperature drops, sharp turns along mountain passes, and congestion in popular recreational areas. For adventure motorcyclists, the Centennial State’s beauty often comes hand-in-hand with danger.”
